Emmitt Smith
Academic and Career Counselor
Since 2020, Emmitt Smith has helped Delaware Technical Community College students on the Owens Campus navigate college life through his role as an academic and career counselor.
Smith moved to Sussex County because of his wife’s job. He previously worked as a study abroad coordinator at Auburn University, preparing students for their education or internships abroad, assisting faculty in creating program-specific study abroad experiences, and co-leading a study abroad program each year.
With this experience, Smith jumped at the opportunity to again work in higher education when he relocated to The First State. Delaware Tech’s mission and goals aligned perfectly with Smith’s personal values, and he feels grateful to be a part of the College.
“I really enjoy the community we have at Delaware Tech,” said Smith. “Being a smaller institution, we have the ability to get to know our students and colleagues beyond just surface level. This allows us to help our students in a more meaningful way.”
Starting his new position in June 2020 during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic presented its own unique challenges, but with the assistance of the Owens staff, Smith was able to get up to speed in no time with virtual training and helpful co-workers. Despite the new protocols and procedures, he was able to build meaningful relationships with both his counseling team and students quickly. Now four years later, Smith loves working collaboratively with the academic and career counseling teams across all four campuses, especially when they all get to see each other in person.
Outside of Delaware Tech, Smith is an avid sports fan and enjoys spending time at the beach and traveling with his family. Fun fact: His family owns a food truck called Pretzelvania, which, according to Smith, serves the best soft pretzels you will ever taste.
