Mason Morris is starting his education at Delaware Tech to build his educational foundation, stay close to home to take care of family, and continue his baseball dream.
“It was important to me to attend college because it allows me to continue my academic and athletic career and college helps allow me to have a better future,” Morris said.
Originally, Morris planned to attend a different college outside of Delaware. But, when his mother needed open heart surgery, he decided to change his plans and enroll at Delaware Tech so he could help his mom.
Even though he joined the Delaware Tech baseball team in January, Morris quickly became an important member of the team, earning the role of starting catcher.
“My teammates made it easy for me to adjust to a new school,” Morris said. “I came in a month or so before the season started and right away everyone was accepting.”
While he was accepted as a member of the baseball team, Morris still had to adjust being a college student and improving his time management skills to make sure he was getting all of the important things done.
“At the end of the day I’m still on my own time schedule,” he said. “I have to take care of myself and get all of my schoolwork done while still finding time to be young and do the thing I want to do.”
After his first year, Morris earned all-region honors for his play on the field and all-academic honors for maintaining a strong grade point average during the season. He said he has had to push himself to be more independent and take care of himself during his time at Delaware Tech.
“My family has always prioritized grades,” Morris said. “Those good grades and all of that learning is what will matter in life at some point.
“And it might just be my competitive nature, but I love to be near the top of my class if I can. I might not be the smartest, but I love to push myself past my limits when it comes to schoolwork.”
After graduation Morris plans to continue pursuing his dream of becoming a Delaware State Trooper. His father has worked for the Dover Police Department for nearly 30 years, which inspired Morris to follow a similar career path.
